$1.34 Trillion, and Everyone Is Buying the Same Three Places

WARC's October forecast puts global ad spend at $1.34 trillion for 2026, up 11.9%. Social is growing 21.3%. Alphabet, Amazon and Meta are on track to take nearly 60% of all spend outside China.

When most brands buy from the same three places, access to media stops separating winners from everyone else. What separates them is what goes inside the media: the idea, the craft, and how well it travels between markets. We wrote up what the forecasts say, where they disagree, and three questions worth asking before 2027 budgets are locked.

Full article Global advertising is growing faster than almost anyone predicted a year ago. WARC Media's Q3 2026 forecast, released on October 8, puts worldwide ad spend at $1.343 trillion this year, up 11.9%, with a further 8.4% expected in 2027 to reach $1.46 trillion. Social media is the fastest-growing channel at $394.6 billion, up 21.3%. Search follows at $295.7 billion, up 14.2%. Television grows 1.2% to $176.2 billion, and WARC expects it to shrink 1.8% next year.

Forecasters do not agree on the size of the market. WPP Media's midyear forecast in June projected 8.9% growth to roughly $1.3 trillion, excluding US political spending, and dentsu's midyear update put growth at 5.0%. The methods and scope differ, but the direction is the same: advertising is growing faster than the wider economy, and the money is concentrating.

The concentration is the part worth attention. WARC expects Alphabet, Amazon and Meta to take 59.7% of global ad spend outside China this year, about $659.6 billion, rising to 61.5% by 2028. Social, search and retail media together account for 66.4% of spend in 2026, and WARC projects 70% by 2028.

National pictures also vary. WPP Media's forecast for Australia, for example, has growth of 7.4% led by retail media, a different mix from the global one. An average hides the market a brand actually sells in.

What this means for brands First, media access is table stakes. When most advertisers buy from the same auctions and the same formats, the platform is a shared resource. In our view, the controllable advantage moves to the work itself. A distinctive idea, executed with craft, is something a competitor cannot buy on the same platform at the same price.

Second, creative and measurement belong in the same conversation. Plenty of brands treat creative as a launch event and reporting as a quarterly chore. With this much money in play, the useful cycle is shorter: make, ship, read the results, and adjust the work.

Third, global averages are a poor guide to local decisions. The right channel mix in Los Angeles is not the right mix in Tokyo, Seoul or Berlin, and an idea built for one market often needs rebuilding, not translating, for the next.

Three questions before 2027 budgets are locked If the logo came off, would anyone recognize this as our work?

Was the core idea built to flex across the markets we sell in, or will it be translated after the fact? Does our reporting tie back to business results every month, or only at year end?

At MAKAIO CREATIVE GROUP we work from Los Angeles, Tokyo, Paris, Seoul, London, Berlin and New York, so those questions come up in most first conversations. Our engagements begin with a two-week, fixed-fee Audit that ends in a plan you can act on whether or not you hire us for the rest. If 2027 planning is on your desk, it is a practical place to start.
